Hello, and welcome to this review of Light On Yoga. One of B.K.S Iyengar’s Yoga Books.
B.K.S Iyengar has played an integral role in introducing the practice of yoga, more specifically, asanas and pranayamas to the western world.
Light On Yoga is a truly invaluable resource for the total beginner or even advanced practitioner.
An overview of Light On Yoga
Light On Yoga is a timeless masterpiece, first published in 1966.
A practical guide for learning yoga from one of the world’s foremost practitioners, B.K.S Iyengar.
He passed away on the 20th of August 2014, at the age of ninety-five. Even though he is no longer with us, he left a legacy for all to benefit from.
The purpose of this book is to teach you how to perform the asanas/postures and pranayama, in a systematic way.
It contains a complete breakdown of 200 asanas/postures. Complemented by over 500 pictures to help the reader achieve mastery.
Light On Yoga is a marvelous body of work containing hints and cautions, as well as a detailed appendix.
In it you’ll find a course that takes you through different stages of practicing asanas.
It also groups specific asanas according to their therapeutic value.

How does Light On Yoga work?
Light On Yoga works by providing you with detailed instructions on how to perform each asana, and pranayama.
It also uses the power of images to help you understand how each asana is done.
Some of the things you’ll find helpful are;
- the descriptive techniques
- the difficulty rating of each asana
- an explanation of how each asana affects your body,
- There’s a section on curative asanas for various diseases that you may find interesting.
The book is structured by first giving the asanas and pranayamas. Accompanied by pictures, and a description of the technique, and the effects of each asana and pranayama.
Then towards the back of the book in the appendices, you’ll find a prescribed training to apply the asanas and pranayamas mentioned.
The training is divided into three levels/courses that take you from the basics and gradually increases the level of difficulty every two weeks or so.
Each course is further broken down into weeks and provides a list of asanas that should be done.
You then go to the page where the asana is located and follow the instructions to do it.
My Light On Yoga review
I began my journey with yoga by watching youtube videos.
However, I felt I needed to learn the foundation. So I began searching around, and came across this book “Light On Yoga”.
I was immediately drawn to it and decided to purchase a copy. That turned out to be one of the best things I’ve done for my health and overall well-being.
When I received the book and looked at the pictures. I was a little intimidated by some of the difficult looking poses/asanas.
But I soon realized that with regular practice I was able to do some of them. I noticed that I had greater balance, more strength, increased stamina, and flexibility.
This book has helped me to overcome things like; Persistent back pains, and moments of dizziness that would happen after bending down for a while and then suddenly standing up.
I love the fact that the book describes the effects that each asana has on the body.
I also enjoy the recommended course at the back of the book, as it allows me to learn in a more structured way.
Light On Yoga is definitely one of the best investments I’ve made, and I’m sure you’ll benefit from it also

- It’s very easy to follow and written in a simple way that you can understand.
- It has over 500 pictures that depict how each asana and pranayama should be done. So you’ll know how to properly perform them.
- It’s not a very big book, so you can easily take it with you wherever you go, and fits neatly into your luggage.
- Each asana comes with detailed instructions and a description of their effects on the body. So you can directly access a specific asana to assist you with any health issues you may have.
- Towards the back of the book in the appendix. You’ll find the asana course and the curative asanas for various diseases.
Light On Yoga cons
- The pictures are in black and white, but still relevant.
- When following the course at the back of the book. It can be a little annoying to flip back and forth to find the asanas that you should perform.
Light On Yoga is a great companion to have on the journey towards health and overall well-being.
For the newcomer, it provides a stable foundation to build upon. For the more seasoned practitioner, it provides support and deeper insight for steady growth.
